A decorative fence normally marks or separates a boundary. A guard or barrier is intended to reduce a fall risk at an edge or change in level. A handrail is a graspable support used along a route, stair or ramp. “Railing” is often used as a broad trade word and can refer to more than one of these duties. The buyer should therefore state the duty and governing project documents instead of asking a supplier to infer safety performance from a photograph or product name.
