Woven vs Welded Gabions

Woven and welded gabions are not interchangeable names for the same cage. Compare their construction and complete project interface before selecting a quotation route.

This guide decides: which construction differences, documents and interface questions belong in a supplier comparison.

This guide does not decide: a universal winner, wall capacity, service life, settlement tolerance or suitability for a specific site.

Compare the mesh architecture.

Double-twist woven units use hexagonal mesh and separate edge, lacing and stiffener elements. Welded units use rigid orthogonal panels and joining components. Ask for the exact panel or mesh drawing, wire schedule, joints, diaphragms and accessories.

Match form to the approved project concept.

Flexibility, face alignment, visual finish, assembly and packing differ, but those differences do not decide stability or durability by themselves. The project designer sets movement, geometry, foundation, drainage, fill and exposure requirements.

Keep standards on separate tracks.

ASTM A975 and EN 10223-3 relate to double-twist/hexagonal routes; ASTM A974 and EN 10223-8 relate to welded routes. Do not assemble a hybrid specification by copying convenient clauses from both.

It separates confirmations from assumptions, options, exclusions and deviations. Civil, structural, hydraulic, geotechnical and rockfall decisions remain with their responsible project authorities.

  • Are cage and joint components listed separately?
  • Which standard route governs the offered product?
  • What movement or appearance requirement is project-defined?
  • Are all deviations explicit?
