Chain Link Mesh, Gauge, Coating & Selvage Guide

Write the mesh opening, steel core, finished wire, coating system and edge treatment together so suppliers are pricing the same fabric.

What this guide decides.

This page decidesWhich fields must identify the woven fabric and how ambiguous gauge or coating descriptions should be clarified.

This page does not decideA universal mesh or wire choice, complete fence performance, post design or product compliance without evidence.

Product-family fabric detail. Confirm measurement conventions, tolerances and coating evidence in the offered specification.

Start with the opening definition.

State the nominal mesh opening, how it is measured and whether a project standard controls the tolerance. A phrase such as small mesh or standard diamond is not enough for quotation, containment, reach-through or accessory compatibility.

Separate core wire from finished wire.

Gauge conventions vary by market, and polymer-coated wire can be described by the steel core or the finished coated diameter. Record a diameter in millimetres or inches, identify the core where relevant and ask the supplier to return the same measurement basis.

Name the coating system, not only the colour.

Metallic-coated, aluminized, zinc-aluminium and polymer-coated fabrics are different specification routes. For polymer-coated fabric, identify the base wire/coating, polymer type or class when required, colour and any requested evidence. Colour alone does not define corrosion protection.

Control the roll and edge condition.

State finished fabric height, roll length, quantity basis and top/bottom selvage. Knuckled or twisted edges change handling and boundary risk; the appropriate arrangement depends on height, access and project requirements.

Carry fabric identity into receiving.

The quotation, datasheet, roll label, packing list and inspection record should use compatible product identifiers and units. If the delivered description changes the core-wire basis, coating class or edge treatment, hold the comparison open until the difference is resolved.

Resolve the five fabric fields.

Use the table to expose the next decision. It is not a performance rating or a substitute for project review.

FieldMesh
RecordNominal opening, orientation and measurement basis.
Reason to clarifyA trade nickname can represent different openings.
FieldWire
RecordSteel core diameter or gauge convention plus finished diameter where relevant.
Reason to clarifyCoating thickness can be mistaken for steel content.
FieldCoating
RecordMetallic base, polymer class/type, colour and evidence requirement.
Reason to clarifyA colour description does not define the protective system.
FieldDimensions
RecordFinished height, roll length, quantity and tolerances.
Reason to clarifyNominal values can hide different delivered areas.
FieldSelvage
RecordTop and bottom edge treatment and orientation.
Reason to clarifyThe edge condition changes handling and interface review.

Project-input schedule.

Carry these fields into the enquiry and return unknowns as open items instead of filling them with generic values.

OpeningNominal mesh and measurement convention.
WireCore diameter/gauge and finished coated diameter where applicable.
FinishMetallic coating, polymer route, colour and requested evidence.
RollHeight, length, quantity basis, tolerances and identification.
EdgesTop/bottom knuckle or twist arrangement and handling requirement.

What a usable supplier response should return.

A useful response does more than repeat the enquiry. It identifies the exact proposed product and component basis, uses the same units and location IDs as the buyer's schedule, and distinguishes confirmed values from assumptions. Where a field depends on a survey, responsible design input, local requirement or another trade, it should remain visibly open rather than being converted into a silent typical value.

The commercial offer should also state what is included, optional and excluded; which drawing or datasheet revision controls the answer; what evidence maps to the offered configuration; and what must be approved before fabrication. This lets buyers compare like with like and prevents a quotation from accidentally closing a structural, safety, civil or compliance decision.

Confirmed basisExact offered products, components, quantities, finish, documents and drawing revision.
Open itemsMissing survey, project criteria, interface decisions, evidence or approvals with a named owner.

Questions to close before quotation or release.

  • Does gauge mean core wire or coated finished wire?
  • What is the nominal opening and how is it measured?
  • Which metallic coating sits below any polymer finish?
  • Which current standard or supplier datasheet defines the offer?
  • What are the top and bottom selvages?
  • How will rolls be labeled and traced at receiving?
