A gate is a moving security interface, not a panel with hinges. Define its operating state, hardware and control boundary separately.

Name every opening.

Give each pedestrian, vehicle, maintenance and emergency opening an ID. Record clear width and height, leaf arrangement, swing or sliding direction, normal state, duty cycle, adjacent road or aisle and required manual override.

Treat the closed leaf as a system.

Review frame stiffness, mesh infill, hinges or rollers, stop and hold-open arrangements, latch and lock protection, gaps at meeting stiles, hinge sides and thresholds, and the transition to fixed fence posts.

Allocate control responsibility.

State who supplies readers, locks, sensors, interlocks, cabling, conduits, local panels, power, network connections, programming and commissioning. A fence supplier should not silently inherit electronic-system design.

Review abnormal conditions.

Include power loss, fire or emergency release, manual operation, maintenance isolation, obstruction, drainage, snow or debris and recovery after impact. The responsible parties must resolve conflicts between security, life safety and operations.

Plan access for installation and lifecycle service.

Confirm how frames and leaves reach the opening, where lifting and setup can occur, how coatings are protected, and which parts need future removal space. Schedule keys, credentials, spare hardware, specialist tools, operating instructions, settings and as-built records. Handover should name the owner of routine checks, powered equipment service, access-control faults and any condition that requires the opening to be placed under temporary control.

The opening type is only one decision. Traffic, available space, operating frequency and abnormal states determine the full interface schedule.

    Fix the operational brief

    State users, vehicles, clear dimensions, operating frequency, normal position, security state and conditions requiring manual or emergency operation.

    Select and draw the movement

    Confirm swing, slide or other operation against gradients, roads, kerbs, drainage, adjacent fence, buildings, overhead constraints and maintenance access.

    Schedule the physical security

    Identify frame, infill, hinges or rollers, meeting stiles, stops, lock protection, guards and every perimeter gap or transition.

    Write the control narrative

    Describe credential, command, release, monitoring, obstruction, fail state, alarm, bypass, manual override and restoration without assuming another package will supply them.

    Test the complete opening

    Verify geometry, movement, closing, locking, signals, abnormal conditions and records with the responsible parties present.
