Survey the line by location.

Provide levels or surveyed points along each run, plus slope starts and ends, abrupt changes, retaining walls, curbs, drains, soft areas, erosion and nearby services. Total length and average gradient cannot reveal where a standard bay conflicts with the terrain.

Choose raking, stepping or a special transition deliberately.

Continuous grades and abrupt level changes can require different pale alignment, rail, bay or terminal arrangements. State the intended visual line and permissible lower-edge condition, then ask the supplier to return a location-specific proposal rather than improvising on site.

Define the ground-gap objective.

A gap may be controlled for appearance, access resistance, animals, debris, drainage or maintenance. These objectives can conflict. Record what the lower edge must do and who approves the solution; do not publish one universal gap as suitable for every project.

Keep soil, wind and drainage with the responsible designer.

Posts and foundations respond to fence geometry, gates, site actions, soil, groundwater, frost, drainage, slopes and nearby structures. The supplier can state offered post/base routes and required inputs, but the responsible project party must approve the civil and structural design.

Use hold points before manufacture and installation.

Number each slope, step, wall, drain, gate and special base. Hold release where surveyed information, design actions, substrate capacity, buried services, anchors or local approvals remain unresolved.

What a usable supplier response should return.

A useful response identifies the exact proposed component and drawing basis, uses the buyer's run and opening IDs, and separates confirmed values from assumptions. It should list inclusions, options, exclusions, deviations and the information still needed from the survey, project designer, installer, gate specialist or local authority.

Where a standard, certificate, test or inspection record is requested, the response should identify its edition, scope, issuing body and relationship to the exact offered configuration. Generic marketing language must not close an engineering, security, safety or compliance decision.

Questions to close before quotation or release.

  • Where exactly does the grade change?
  • How is fence height referenced on the slope?
  • What lower-edge condition is required and why?
  • Which drains, walls and services cross the line?
  • Who provides design actions and soil information?
  • Who approves foundations, anchors and installation?
