Palisade Profiles, Pale Heads & Components Guide

Use W-profile, D-profile and decorative as enquiry routes, then require the supplier to return the exact offered section, component schedule and drawing.

Treat W and D as profile families, not complete specifications.

A profile name does not define the full section, thickness, steel grade, tolerances, pale centres, head form or connection. State the requested route and ask the supplier to return a dimensioned drawing and controlled schedule. Keep any decorative alternative separate so appearance changes do not hide structural or security assumptions.

Specify the pale and head together.

Record the pale profile, finished length, head form, orientation, cut-edge treatment and any public-contact constraint. Single-point, multi-point, rounded or decorative descriptions can vary across suppliers; a drawing or approved sample should control the offered geometry.

Build the load path from pales to posts.

The schedule should identify rails, pale-to-rail fasteners, rail-to-post connectors or fish plates, line posts, terminal posts, gate posts, caps and special transition parts. Ask for connection details at ends, corners and openings rather than assuming intermediate-bay hardware works everywhere.

Keep fasteners and finish compatible.

Fastener material, coating, head form, locking method and accessibility affect assembly and maintenance. Record whether tamper-resistant or shear arrangements are proposed, but do not describe them as a certified security result unless the complete tested configuration supports the claim.

Return unknowns instead of typical values.

If the project has not fixed height, spacing, foundations or local design actions, mark those fields open. The supplier can present available configurations and required inputs; the responsible project party must approve the selected arrangement and civil interfaces.

What a usable supplier response should return.

A useful response identifies the exact proposed component and drawing basis, uses the buyer's run and opening IDs, and separates confirmed values from assumptions. It should list inclusions, options, exclusions, deviations and the information still needed from the survey, project designer, installer, gate specialist or local authority.

Where a standard, certificate, test or inspection record is requested, the response should identify its edition, scope, issuing body and relationship to the exact offered configuration. Generic marketing language must not close an engineering, security, safety or compliance decision.

  • What pale head and public-contact condition apply?
  • How are ends, corners and gates terminated?
  • Which fasteners and finishes are included?
  • Which dimensions are supplier options and which are project requirements?
